The Souper Bowl of Caring is THIS Weekend!
On Super Bowl Sunday,
Feb 3, Epiphany youth and Elders will collect donations in large
soup pots and donate 100% of the collection to our local food bank
here in Castle Rock. We
have officially registered Epiphany for 2008 and have listed a goal
of collecting 100 non-perishable food items and/or
$100.
This national movement
began on Super Bowl Sunday in 1988 by a simple prayer spoken by Brad
Smith, a S.C. pastor, "Lord,
as we enjoy the Super Bowl football game, help us be mindful of
those who are without a bowl of soup to eat." Young people have
collected more than $41 million through the Souper Bowl of Caring.
Every penny goes to local charities.
The
Souper Bowl of Caring
is endorsed by six NFL owners. In 2007, more than 14,000
organizations collected over $8 million through the Souper Bowl of
Caring. |

Grocery Scrip
There is a new look to the
grocery scrip program. First - the paper certificates
are no longer available (individuals had been forging them) so
now they are the plastic wallet size cards in $25, $50, or
$100 denominations. Second - they are now ONLY usable at
King Soopers (or their affiliates, which are listed on the
back of the card). Shortly we will be getting ones for
Safeway as well. Sorry for the inconvenience. You
may purchase the scrips in the Epiphany
kitchen. |

Coats for the
Homeless Are you
cold? Hungry? Homeless? You are blessed if
you are none of these things. Want to make a
difference? Please bring your coats, mittens, scarves,
and hats for the homeless and let's spread some warmth and
love to those less fortunate. Boxes will be located at
the back of the church this weekend and next. It's cold
out there! |

Welcoming Nancy Lund
We are excited to introduce to
you our newest staff member joining the Epiphany family. We believe God has
brought us a wonderful addition that will give great support
to the life of Epiphany.
Nancy Lund is our new administrative assistant. She and her family are
members at Trinity Lutheran in Franktown. Her husband, Guy, is a
civil engineer who works on reservoirs. Their daughters,
Alison and Stephanie attend Lutheran High School Parker. Alison, a freshman, is
a member of DCE John's Praise Band and she also participates
in both volleyball and basketball. Stephanie, a junior,
participates in volleyball, basketball, and soccer. Stephanie also
composes music that Alison sings, so they are quite the
musical dynamic duo.
The Lunds live in Stroh Ranch in Parker and enjoy
camping and hiking.
Nancy can be reached in the office by e-mail at
office@epiphanylc.org or
by calling the office at (303) 688-4435. Nancy works 30 hours
per week -
primarily Tuesday-Thursday from 9am-2pm and then she
works flex hours on Mondays and Fridays, depending on her
duties for that week.
Please stop by or call the office and give Nancy a warm
Epiphany
welcome. |
What is the
Significance of Lent?
Early in the Church's history, the major
events in Christ's life were observed with special
observances, such as His birth, baptism, death, resurrection
and ascension. As these observances developed, a period of
time was set aside prior to the major events of Jesus' birth
and resurrection as a time of preparation. During Lent, the
Church's worship assumes a more penitential character. The
color for the season is purple, a color often associated with
penitence. The "Hymn of Praise" is omitted from the liturgy.
The word "Alleluia" is usually omitted as well. By not using
the alleluia--a joyful expression meaning "Praise the
Lord"--until Easter, the Lenten season is clearly set apart as
a distinct time from the rest of the year. Additionally, it
forms a powerful contrast with the festive celebration of
Jesus' resurrection when our alleluias ring loud and clear.
Finally, the penitential character of Lent is not its sole
purpose. In the ancient Church, the weeks leading up to Easter
were a time of intensive preparation of the candidates who
were to be baptized at the Easter vigil on Holy Saturday. This
time in the Church's calendar was seen as an especially
appropriate time for Baptism because of the relationship
between Christ's death and resurrection and our own in Holy
Baptism (see Romans 6:1-11). This focus would suggest that the
season of Lent serves not only as a time to meditate on the
suffering that Christ endured on our behalf but also as an
opportunity to reflect upon our own Baptism and what it means
to live as a child of
